You don’t have to be big to make a big impression…

Sometimes it’s good to be small.

This past weekend, Mercati al Borgo in Taurasi presented a smattering of piccolo wine producers spread throughout Taurasi’s centro storico. Ready to talk about their wines to whoever was willing to listen.

I was.

I had the time to perform a visual examination of my aglianico…version Taurasi, Taurasi reserve or base. Dark ruby red color

I was able to inhale and enjoy the aromas that an aglianico has to share—spices, red fruits,

Then taste…not gulp down…but really taste the wine. Enjoy the tannins, or not. Enjoy its balance, its smoothness, or maybe not.

But more importantly…take advantage of an opportunity that one does not get every day. Talk with the producer. Express opinions, ideas, and my thoughts about the wines. Ask questions about anything and everything from location of the vineyard to the vinification process.

Have them explain, for example, as Luigi Tecce did. His harvest date for 2006; 27 November. The incredible amount of rain in August followed by great if not unusually hot weather in September and October that caused him to make that crucial decision. 2007 instead…a very dry year in respect to 2006. His vineyards, with 85 year old vines, are located 500 meters above sea level where the soil is rich in calcium and contains a noticeable quantity of clay and sand.

I walked away that day with an appreciation for the passion, the enthusiasm and the drive that these piccoli producers have. In fact, I don’t consider them as piccolo. I see a grande desire for their territory, their wines, and their story. And that is what it’s all about….

Non c’è bisogno di essere grandi per fare una grande impressione… A volte è bello essere di piccole dimensioni.

Lo scorso fine settimana, Mercati in Borgo al Taurasi ha presentato un gruppo di produttori di vino nel centro storico di Taurasi. Pronti a parlare del loro vino a chi era disposto ad ascoltare.

Io ero lì e pronta.

Ho avuto il tempo di eseguire un esame visivo dell’Aglianico in versione Taurasi e Taurasi Riserva. Colore rosso rubino scuro

Ho potuto respirare e godere degli aromi che l’Aglianico ha da condividere…spezie, frutti rossi,

Poi gustare… senza correre…e davvero gustare il vino. Godetevi i tannini, oppure no. Godetevi il suo equilibrio, la sua morbidezza, o forse no.

Ma soprattutto… approfittare di un’opportunità che non si ha ogni giorno. Parla con il produttore. esprimerà pareri, idee e il mio pensiero sui vini. Porre domande su qualsiasi cosa e tutto, dalla posizione del vigneto alla vinificazione.

Li hanno spiegare, per esempio, come ha fatto Luigi Tecce. La sua data di vendemmia per il 2006; 27 novembre. L’incredibile quantità di pioggia nel mese di agosto seguito da del tempo insolitamente caldo in settembre e ottobre, che gli ha fatto prendere questa decisione cruciale. 2007 invece … un anno molto secco rispetto al 2006. I suoi vigneti, con viti vecchie di 85 anni, si trovano a 500 metri sul livello del mare, dove il terreno è ricco di calcio e contiene una notevole quantità di argilla e sabbia.

Elmi, una cantina giovane che ha deciso di fare e imbottigliare i propri vini, dopo generazioni di coltivazione e di vendita di uva ad altri produttori …

E molte, molte altre storie che vorrei raccontare nel futuro vineyard hopping blog …

Me ne andai quel giorno con un apprezzamento per la passione, l’entusiasmo e l’unità che queste piccoli produttori hanno. In realtà, io non li considero come piccoli. Vedo un grande desiderio per il loro territorio, i loro vini, e la loro storia. E questo , secondo me, è grande….
